Four prestigious awards underscore Peru’s leading position as a destination in South America.
Peru continues to build on its impressive tourism track record by picking up four prestigious awards at the 2023 World Travel Awards, also known as the “Oscars of Tourism.”
These awards reinforce Peru’s excellent positioning as a destination and honor its global importance in the tourism industry. This year, Peru secured four of the prestigious awards at the South American level: “South America’s Leading Culinary Destination,” “South America’s Leading Cultural Destination,” and “South America’s Leading Destination.” To top it off, the sanctuary of Machu Picchu was also recognized as “South America’s Leading Tourist Attraction.”
The regional awards gala was held on August 26 in Saint Lucia. Angélica Matsuda, executive president of PROMPERÚ, stressed the importance of these recognitions for the international promotion of Peruvian tourism and its economic reactivation.
“These awards are high praise for our natural wonders, our culture and our excellent gastronomy. They confirm our continued commitment to first-class tourism services and the preservation of our cultural heritage,” Matsuda said.
Since 2009, Peru has consistently cleaned up at the World Travel Awards, particularly building its prominence as a culinary destination. Between 2012 and 2022, the country was named “World’s Best Culinary Destination” no less than ten times and “South America’s Best Culinary Destination” nine times.

The World Travel Awards are considered a globally recognized institution, with various regional editions. Selections are made through online public voting as well as by industry experts worldwide, adding weight to the awards received.
