Short Overview – German-speaking Markets

The COVID-19 quarantine measures are being further untightened in all German states. All federal states are responsible for their own implementation. They have also released the strict regulations towards (however always observing the sanitary and distancing recommendations):

·       Opening of cinemas, theatres, opera houses

·       Permission of events (depending on state for up to 500 people) with social distancing rules

·       Permission of contact sports inside as well as outside

·       Opening of indoor playgrounds, houses in zoological gardens, escape rooms

·       Some states (f.ex. Mecklenburg Pomerania) are skipping the contact limits

·       Schools have opened with regular classes after the summer holidays however some states already introduced the compulsory use of masks

  • Federation asks organizer for voucher protection to the cash desk. According to a draft of the Federal Ministry of Justice the organizers are to be involved in the issue of coupons for canceled journeys in their security by so-called guarantee premiums.   • TUI further steams down the offer in winter.   • FTI lowers sales levels and pays commission earlier: FTI Group launches a new commission model in which the sales levels have been adjusted downwards due to the corona crisis. Starting from 1 November all travel agencies, which generate a minimum conversion of 125,000 euro in the current financial year instead of as before 150,000 euro or announce themselves to the start UP program, get ten per cent basic commission starting from the first reservation. Agencies with lower turnover will receive eight percent. For bookings of FTI-owned hotels and Orascom hotels there is one percent additionally, but at least ten percent. The Munich-based company also accommodates the agencies in terms of commission payments.   • UNWTO: Safe travel is possible. The latest data from the World Tourism Organization demonstrates the serious impact of COVID-19 on the sector. According to the latest edition of the World Tourism Barometer of the United Nations specialized agency, international tourist arrivals fell by 65% in the first half of the year, while this June the decline in international arrivals was 93%.   • Travel warning for 38 more countries to be dropped. As of October 1, the worldwide travel warning is to fall and only apply to risk areas. This means that the Foreign Office would no longer warn against travel to 38 countries, the authority told the Bundestag’s Tourism Committee.
