CURRENT MAJOR TOPICS WITH THE TOURISM INDUSTRY IN THE DACH REGION

  • FTI INSOLVENCY:
  • WHAT HAPPENS NOW: FTI has filed for insolvency. An insolvency administrator is now taking over and examining whether FTI can be continued or sold. If both fail, FTI will be wound up. The insolvency administrator is assessing the value of FTI and analysing contracts. Investors such as Certares could still be interested, despite the lack of financing and state aid. Employees receive insolvency compensation for three months. The insolvency administrator must make a quick decision on how to proceed. For travellers, this means that there will probably be no more trips from Tuesday. Ongoing trips are covered by the German Travel Security Fund so that they can be completed as planned. Read more
  • FTI BANKRUPCY LEADS TO REORDER OF THE MARKET: Following the insolvency of tour operator FTI, the travel market is reorganising itself. Competitors such as TUI and Dertour are planning to increase their offers and woo FTI customers. TUI is offering discounts and waiving advance payments, while Dertour is also increasing its flight and hotel contingents. The German Travel Security Fund covers the losses so that holidaymakers are reimbursed for their package holiday payments. FTI had an aggressively priced business model with a low equity base, which got the company into difficulties. There are currently around 65,000 FTI holidaymakers abroad, including many in Greece, where payments to hotels are outstanding. Read more
  • HOLIDAY AIRLINES REMAIN CALM SO FAR: The vacation flight industry does not expect the insolvency of FTI to have a serious impact on its capacity and flight planning in the summ. r. A survey by “touristik aktuell” revealed that airlines such as Condor and Sun Express assume that the gap created by FTI will be quickly closed by the market. Although the FTI bankruptcy affects many bookings in Turkey, Sun Express plans to leave its seat capacity for trips to Turkey and Egypt unchanged and to provide additional capacity if required. Vacation airlines such as Discover Airlines and Sundair are still examining the specific impact on their summer capacities. At the same time, the airlines are busy bringing affected FTI customers home safely in accordance with the requirements of the German Travel Security Fund. Sun Express and Condor assure that all booked return flights will be operated as normal. Read more
  • WHAT THE TRAVEL INDUSTRY SAYS ABOUT THE FTI BANKRUPTCY: The travel industry is affected by the FTI insolvency and emphasizes the importance of customer money protection. Martin Wittwer from the Swiss Travel Association emphasizes the added value of travel agencies, while Marco Amos from the Guarantee Fund stresses the financial management of a possible FTI bankruptcy in Switzerland. Alex Vogel from STAR Enterprises advises travel agencies to take specific measures to limit the damage. Representatives such as Louis Burgess from the Malta Tourist Board and Deniz Ugur from Bentour Reisen emphasize the importance of diversification and customer confidence. Christina Wagner from Travelshop criticizes the uncertainty and the additional workload for travel agencies, while Stephan Amstad from Fespo-Messe regrets the loss of an important partner. Barbara Wohlfahrt from Reisecocktail GmbH calls for better communication strategies and additional safeguards for individual services. Heinz Zimmermann from Topline Group emphasized the challenges posed by changing customer behaviour in the digital age and questioned FTI's ability to adapt to these new market conditions. Read more

  • MARKET RESEARCHERS ANTICIPATE A STRONG SUMMER SEASON: The analysis by Travel Data + Analytics (TDA) shows positive developments for the travel industry: the 2023/24 winter season is recording double-digit sales growth compared to the previous year and pre-corona levels. 72% of the previous year's sales for the new summer season have already been pre-booked by May. Summer sales are up by 20% thanks to good early bookings. A quarter of the turnover generated in April is already attributable to the coming winter season and later vacation trips. Long-distance travel accounts for almost 25 percent of total sales, but is not yet at pre-pandemic levels. Package tours are experiencing strong growth, particularly in online sales. Chinese travel preferences are changing as they increasingly travel individually and favor niche markets such as health, wellness and culinary. Social media plays an important role in discovering new destinations and experiences. The ITB China show saw strong participation from exhibitors and visitors, with 13 destinations attracting Chinese visitors for the first time.
